Velvet Flower Craft

History of Velvet Flower Craft

Chinese silk velvet flowers, known as “Rong Hua” , trace their origin back to the Qin and Han dynasties and flourished during the Tang, Song, and Ming periods. Once exclusive to royal courts and aristocratic accessories, they symbolized prosperity, femininity, and good fortune.

Crafting Process of Velvet Craft

1. Material Preparation: Traditional velvet flower is made with mulberry or tussah silk, known for its subtle sheen and soft texture. Natural dyes ensure long-lasting colors, while copper wires form a flexible inner structure, allowing for vivid floral shaping.

2. Cutting and Sewing: Craftsmen first accurately cut out shapes of petals and leaves according to design requirements. They then meticulously sew these pieces together using needles and threads to form the complete flower structure.

3. Embellishment and Decoration: After completing the basic flower structure, craftsmen add various embellishments such as beads, ribbons, or metallic threads to enhance the artistic and ornate qualities of the flowers.

Modern Applications

Today, Rong Hua has expanded from hair ornaments to brooches, earrings, fashion accents, and even home décor. In modern Chinese weddings, they are often seen on bridal headpieces or integrated into Hanfu culture, blending tradition with fresh aesthetics.

Cultural Significance and Heritage Value

More than a craft, Rong Hua embodies the soft resilience of Chinese femininity. In 2006, Nanjing Velvet Flowers were listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in China, representing a timeless pursuit of elegance.

By reviving this exquisite heritage, we celebrate the quiet strength and grace of tradition—woven into every accessory that tells a story of time, tenderness, and art.
